Crescent White Gold Brooch set with Pearls
The crescent moon brooch is fashioned in 9 carat white gold and lined with pearls that are graduated in size. Hallmarked London and dated 'B' of 1976.
Crescent moons and celestial iconography were not only popular as symbolic motifs during the Victorian period but have a long history and fascination displayed in jewellery throughout the centuries. For example, during the 19th century many believed that the crescent moon represented powerful feminine energy and the 'moon goddess'. Whilst a resurge in moon, star and sun motifs were popular in jewellery during the mid-20th century due to the fascination and race to the first landing of the moon, which was completed by Neil Armstrong in 1969.
