Antique Turquois & Pearl Floral Brooch
Victorian turquoise and pearl brooch. The brooch has been crafted with 33 natural seed pearls and 16 natural cabochon turquoises, set in a floral shaped design, on a 9ct gold mount.
Turquoise is a gem that has a long history of being used in jewellery. For many centuries, the gem was believed to bring good fortune to the wearer and some of its earliest records used in jewellery date back to the Ancient Egyptians when it was mined in 3000 BC. Not only was Turquoise set into gold jewellery, but it also had spiritual beliefs and carved into amulets, whilst thought to be so precious that it was also used in burial masks for the King Tutankhamun.
During the Victorian era, the stone became incredibly popular when Queen Victoria gave her bridal party gifts of turquoise brooches because it was seen as a symbol of love. For the brooch at present, this is an interesting combination along with the pearls that were also at the height of popularity during the Victorian due to their association with purity, chastity and delicacy.
